There’s little to share this week on Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings’ sanctuary-friendly policy of looking past the immigration status of potential offenders encountered on the streets.
…but there was a rape of a 14-year-old girl in her own high school.
A week has now passed since I contacted the Florida Sheriffs Association — Demings, who effectively picks and chooses which laws he will enforce, is the current president of the organization — to inquire as to whether they support Demings’ reckless policy of not checking the immigration status of those in the United States illegally.
The FSA, which bills itself as the “voice of sheriffs, 67 men and women united in the service of protecting Florida,” has been as quiet as a church mouse… which can only mean a) silence is consent and they do support Demings’ stance, or b) the organization is embarrassed by his leniency toward illegal immigrants and, finding themselves in an awkward position, unable to respond.
Meanwhile, in the news this week is the rape of a 14-year-old girl in a Rockville, Maryland, high school bathroom by two assailants suspected of being in the U.S. illegally.
School officials there thought it was a good idea to place the assailants, Sanchez Milian, 18, and Jose Montano, 17, in the 9th grade. According to The Baltimore Sun, the men — both have been charged as adults — were part of the more than 150,000 unaccompanied minors who showed up on our southern border in the past three years and allowed to enter under the Obama administration — a policy Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan described as “a kind of amnesty.”
Despite a sympathetic media doing its best to ignore the brutal crime, which allegedly included sodomy, a friend said she hoped elected officials in Orange County were paying attention.
Ever the skeptic, I say the case is a little too uncomfortable for the sensibilities of politicians whose electoral success is dictated by the demographic make up of the voting public.
Not that Americans being victimized by people in our country illegally deters politicians. In the face of the young girl being raped, the Democrat-controlled Maryland House of Delegates voted this week to become a “sanctuary state.”
And while the governor promises a veto, the sponsor of the bill sounds an awful lot like Sheriff Demings when explaining the reasoning behind the legislation.
